A Lost Dream

I walk through life searching
Is it reality or only a dream
Searching for someone to love
Longing to be loved for the person I am
Can it be reality or only a lost dream

Success is a sirens song to replace love
Success promises admiration but returns envy
It promises wealth but creates dependence
It manufactures a feeling of permanence but is fleeting
Success will come and go at the whim of others

Wealth entices with material pleasures
Wealth promises happiness at a price
It promises love but brings greed
It creates dependence on it for pleasure
Wealth cannot bring inner peace

Religion holds out the promise of love
Religion says to the unloved; you are loved
It brings hope but only if you believe
It promises compassion but demands obedience
Religion promises a better future but not today

What do I desire
Only a hand to hold that will assist me when I stumble
Eyes that I can look into and see the soul
Ears that hear the music of happiness
Arms that embrace as the darkness closes in
